SUMMARY OF THE 2002 TROUT SEASON.

The fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable and the Saranac proved to be a banner year for large trout. Despite the six weeks of hot weather and low water conditions on both streams, the fishing remained good. Those wise enough to change their tactics during the warmer periods not only caught plenty of fish but were able to catch larger ones. It was easier to locate the large fish with low water conditions and when they moved into the faster currents and deeper pools, it concentrated them. Thus, the early morning and late evening hours produced more large fish than normally would have been taken. It is fortunate that all our guides promote catch and release so these fish were returned unharmed. As the fall rains came and the rivers returned to normal levels, the fish were spread out once more and normal fishing conditions returned.

Over all, the season was a better one than average. There were fewer anglers on the streams during the low water conditions because many of the less experienced did not know how to take advantage of the low water conditions or picked the wrong times to fish. For the most part, fishing during the middle of the day during adverse conditions is a waste of time.

The fall fishing in September and early October was not as consistent as last season as we did not get the long lasting hatches of Isonychia. However, the blue winged olive hatches made up for that. They lasted into the end of October and as of this past week, a few good fish were taken on small olives fished on the surface. The water temperature is now down in high 30s and low 40s so most of the fish now are taken on small streamers, nymphs or bead heads fished along the bottom.

Over the entire season, there were about the same number of fisher people visiting as last year. The catch and release section of the river was once again over fished but this took the pressure off much of the remaining stream. It was still possible to fish all day on certain sections of the river without seeing another angler. As in the past, most of the larger and native fish were taken on the larger Ausable Wulff pattern and the Ausable Bomber. Another large fly accounting for many of the larger fish was the stimulator in sizes 10 and 12. The orange stimulator was the color of choice this year. The most productive fly underneath was the orange bodied bead head picket fin. It produced consistently throughout the season.

November usually gives us some nice warm days to fish and the catch and release section still has plenty of big boys to challenge the dedicated off-season angler. The Adirondack Sport Shop will remain open until after Christmas and will be offering great Christmas specials on rods throughout the months of November and December.

The predicted rains this past Friday night brought the river to about a foot over normal level . Sunday, the water receded, bringing the river right back to normal September level. Perfect shape now - what we have been waiting for. Fish were rising again on Sunday to dries and fishermen reported good catches of trout on black ghost streamers and orange bodied conehead picket finns.

The higher water over the weekend also succeeded in bringing the salmon into the lower sections of the Ausable and Saranac. We can expect some good runs of salmon over the next three and four weeks. Most productive patterns for the landlocks are purple and silver smelt and size 10 orange coneheads also produce well. These are in addition to your standard patterns of hornburgs and gray ghosts. Over the weekend, our guides did great with their clients on some of the local ponds. Rainbows are again being taken on the surface. One of our guides who takes clients out for pike and bass had a very successful weekend with a number of pike taken on flies.

After several weeks, much needed rain fell last night and the river is now at normal level. This brings back the Isonychia hatch along with blue winged olives and the pumpkin caddis, a favorite with fish and fishermen. It also brings back the AuSable Wulff and AuSable Bomber as the top producing flies.

Water temperatures are perfect and we can now expect the wonderful fall fishing to be as usual. Make plans to come and enjoy the last few weeks of the season as the fall weather cannot be beat.

Much needed rains over the past couple days have brought the river up about five inches but it is still about six inches below normal level for the year. However, the water temperature is perfect and the fishing has been excellent right now. Trout have been very active.

Good hatches are still coming off in the early morning and evening and the bigger fish are hitting on dark Haystacks and bomber patterns. Most productive early morning patterns are small Usuals and blue winged olive parachutes. Some pumpkin caddis are coming off in the late afternoon and evening.

Low water conditions make the river very easy to wade and fish easy to locate. Rains should also bring a few salmon into the lower end of the river.

September 12, 2002

Much needed rain has been falling most of the day today and the fishing is already improving. Good hatches of isonychia bicolors, pumpkin caddis and stoneflies on the river. Over the past couple days, our guides with their clients have taken and released a dozen fish sixteen to twenty inches. We are at that time of the year when you only need four flies to catch fish the rest of the month. They are the dark Haystack, the Ausable Bomber, parachute blue winged olive and the pumpkin caddis. Throw in the Isonychia emerger and the Isonychia parachute and you will be set for the rest of the season.

The drizzly and cooler afternoons make great fishing, even during the day. Water is still very low but stream temperatures are perfect for the hatches.

Our next BBQ and clinic is September 21. This is the last one before our big end of the year bash - the annual Pig Roast which is October 12. Mark your calendars!

September 2, 2002

Labor Day weekend anglers were treated to some good fishing on the West Branch of the AuSable. Although the river is about ten inches below normal level for this time of the year, the cold nights have kept the water temperature in the high 50s, much to the trout's liking.

Good hatches of small blue winged olives, tricos and a sufficient number of isonychias have produced some great fishing. A number of fish were caught on isonychia parachutes, parachute blue winged olives, light bodied usuals and a number of large fish were taken on Ausable bombers. Another pattern producing well for large fish was a size 8 black stonefly nymph, a pattern that consistently takes large fish on t he river.

Those anglers fishing for bass and walleye also reported good catches on large black stonefly nymphs and large bombers. It's also a great time to go after small brookies on the small feeder streams.

Let's hope the forecast for rain this Tuesday and Wednesday will pan out. Keep your fingers crossed!

he colder nights have really given a great boost to the fishing on the AuSable, despite the low water conditions. Lots of fish being taken and good hatches are coming off. It's been some of the best fishing we have had all year. The water temperature is in the high 50s to the low 60s, making the trout very active.

There are some showers predicted on the weekend.

Fish are being taken on the Isonychia Parachutes and the dark Haystacks since the longest hatch of the year (Isonychia Bicolor) has begun. The colder weather always brings them on. Small blue winged olive parachutes have been very productive during the early morning. Also several large fish have been taken on size 8 black stone fly nymphs.

We are due more rain showers today and tonight which will continue to refresh the river. We got showers a couple days ago but still need more.

The fishing, however, has been good since the cooler nights have brought the water temperature way down. It is now in the high fifties to the low sixties. This has meant the fishing has held up nicely.

Isonychia bicolors are coming off in the afternoon and trout are feeding very well on Isonychia Parachutes and dark Haystacks. Three large fish were taken in the past couple days by clients which included two twenty three inchers and a beautiful six pound brown taken by TJ Swan, a visiting recording artist from Manhattan. All three of these fish were taken on a size 10 AuSable Bomber. Other patterns working well include Joe's Hopper and stimulators.

Temps remain in the mid sixties which mean we have June conditions in August. This makes for continued great fishing, especially in the late evening hours. Be sure and spend your time in the fast pocket water.

Hatches of caddis, stoneflies, and some mayflies continue. Big fly of the week is the AuSable Bomber, which has accounted for more than a dozen large trout over twenty inches.

Thunderstorms which have been predicted have managed to skirt around us for the large part and the river level is good. Even the bait fishermen have been successful in the famous Flame Pool as well as along Riverside Drive behind the old skeet range. This is a floatable section. Also, the large pool below the High Falls Gorge. This is where the fish congregate when the water warms up.

July 27, 2002

The river is in good condition since Mother Nature sent us some rain and cooler temperatures. More showers are predicted for the weekend which will refresh the stream even more. Water temperature remains in the high sixties. Hatches are good with lots of caddis and stone flies coming off.

River was stocked again this week with big fish. Clients have taken several large trout (some 20 to 22 inches) in the late evening hours while out with the guides. This is a great time to book a night trip and catch one of those lunkers yourself!

Most productive flies have been the Usual, Golden Caddis and beadhead picket finn in the rougher sections of the stream.

The AuSable remains low as we have had no rain in the last few days. Despite the low water conditions, there are many large trout being caught and released, however. Showers are predicted for today but the remainder of the week and the weekend are suppose to be sunny and warm.

Over the past few days, five fish in the 20 plus inch range have been taken by clients out with our guides. Best fishing is early morning and late evening. It's a great time to go out for that trophy fish you've always wanted. Book a night fishing trip and do just that! Call 518-946-2605.

Cooler temperatures descended on us yesterday. It was 59 degrees this morning which should bring down the water temperature a bit more. It is ranging from 62 to 68, depending on where you are. Fishing has been good and it is looking good for the ESPN games which start here in Lake Placid today.

There are a multitude of hatches coming off including lots of caddis, stoneflies, and potamathus. Patterns to use are light Haystacks, AuSable Caddis, tan caddis, AuSable Wulff and picket finns.

It's been a beautiful Fourth of July weekend with cooler temperatures coming our way and lots of good fishing. The water level on the low side so wading is very easy. Hopefully, we will get some refreshing showers this week. Water temperature is varying between the mid sixties and mix seventies, depending on where you are.

Lots of caddis are coming off along with lots of stoneflies so best producing patterns are Golden Caddis, AuSable Caddis, light Haystacks and large golden stone nymphs fished in the rough water.

July 6, 2002

Weather has finally broken and we have cooler temperatures. Although the water level is low, the fishing is holding up very well. Best times to be out on the water is early morning and evening hours. Fishermen are reporting good catches of large trout on golden stoneflies fished deep and AuSable Caddis, Golden Caddis and Usuals fished on the surface. There are LOTS of caddis on the water as well as stoneflies.

Water temperature is varying from the high sixties to 75 or so, depending on the area you are in. Remember to fish the fast, tumbling water sections of the stream. They will produce best with the warmer water temperatures. Small emergers will produce well on the slower waters early morning and later into the evening hours.

River is in excellent condition. It's easily wadable and there are lots of hatches coming off They include the creme variant, rusty spinners, lots of caddis and stoneflies.

The water temperature is holding in the high sixties, despite the hot weather we are having. This is the perfect temperature for hatches and fishing conditions.

Most productive patterns this week are golden caddis size 14, Ausable Caddis size 14, creme Haystack size 12, small rusty Haystack sizes 14 & 16 and stoneflies.

After the bad storms we had the end of the week, the river had come up quite a bit. It has dropped now and is fishable and wadable with caution. We have a great weather forecast with no rain in it and by tomorrow it should be close to normal conditions.

Last night, there were hatches of potamathus, large stoneflies and lots of caddis. But the flies producing were the streamers - hornburgs, conehead picket finns with an orange body and large black and golden stoneflies.

Warm weather predicted for the next few days so fishing should be great.

The river is in good condition and the water level is down to a normal level and is easily wadable. Showers are predicted for the next couple days but it shouldn't be enough to bring the level up too much.

Hatches include some cahills and potamathus (creme variant). Great morning and evening fishing now. Most productive patterns are light or cream Haystack, tan caddis with rust body, AuSable Caddis and picket finn.

A surprise day of steady rain brought the river up about eight inches and muddied it. Sun today so far but more showers are predicted for later today. Hopefully, not heavy. A few fishermen gave been taking good size fish on beadhead and conehead picket finns. Streamer fishermen have been doing great on Hornburgs. A couple days without rain should bring the river back to wadable condition.

Hex hatch should soon be appearing on the lakes - perhaps this coming week. We'll keep you posted.

Another perfect day in the Adirondacks. River is actually a little bit on the low side but is in perfect wading condition. A variety of hatches coming off which include Green Drake spinners, gray foxes, rusty spinners, yellow sallies and lots of caddis. Many trout being taken with the most productive flies being size 14 and 16 rusty orange body Haystacks, AuSable Caddis and tan caddis. The bigger fish are being taken just prior to dark around 8 and 9:30 in the evening.

Outlook for the weekend weather wise couldn't be any better. Warm temperatures today and tomorrow (80s) with only chance of showers at night. Great weekend to attend our next free BBQ and fly fishing clinic Saturday at 1:00 in the afternoon. See you there.

June 20, 2002

Hatches are coming off all over the river. It is in the best condition of the year Good level and very wadable with a perfect temperature. HEAVY HATCHES OF GREEN DRAKES STILL COMING OFF. Last night, a number of large fish were taken on the Green Drake spinner. Fly fishing is the best of the year. Other hatches coming off now also include gray foxes, rusty spinners, yellow sallies and stoneflies. Most productive patterns taking lots of fish are the gray Haystacks with rusty orange bodies, AuSable Caddis, tan caddis Haystack spinner of the green drake

Bear in mind that the Hex hatch is just around the corner. It usually starts around the last week in June through the first week in July. It's a great time to book an evening trip on our pontoon boat for some incredible fishing. Call 518-946-2605 for details.

Although we have had a steady diet of showers for the past couple days, the river is in excellent condition and fly fishing has been very good Lots of caddis along with some yellow sallies and gray foxes. Water temperature is still cool, hovering around 60 degrees. Water level is slightly elevated but still wadable with caution

Most productive flies have been tan Haystack, tan caddis with yellow bodies, AuSable Caddis, stimulators, and golden stoneflies.

Weather is trying to clear and all is looking more promising. Reports of a few large fish over twenty inches taken so remember, overcast drizzly days are the best fishing.

We have received quite a bit of rain over the last couple days and it has brought the level of the AuSable up about a foot. It is now receding nicely and the river is definitely wadable in many areas as I have just watched several fishermen near Shadow Rock, in the Monument area and last night, at the Iron Bridge on Riverside Drive. In fact, let me share a funny with you. One of our clients was fishing by himself after a guide trip a few days ago and he came in last night after the river had risen to its peak. He reported catching eight fish and when we asked him if he was wading in high water conditions, he replied ñGee, I didn't realize it was high!î This confirms what I have said many times - the river is often unwadable but NEVER unfishable.

For those who plan to come up this weekend, the river has already receded four inches since this morning. Although showers are predicted for the next couple days, they are NOT SUPPOSE to be heavy and should be mixed with intermittent sun. Hopefully, there won't be any more high water.

June 10, 2002

Warm weather and warmer water temperature saw some green drake action on the lower sections of the river. There have been prolific hatches of march browns, caddis, and some gray foxes. Many fish are still being taken on the tan caddis, which has remained a hot fly along with the Haystack and the green drake emerger. In addition, the stimulator has been working great.

Water level is actually a tad on the low side, making the river very wadable. However, we have some rain predicted for mid week which should refresh it nicely.

June 6, 2002

River has been stocked heavily this week to make all you fly fishermen very happy. Lots of fish up to 15 inches were put into the catch and release area and some surrounding areas. Number of small fish were put in at the bridge in town to provide sport for kids and bait fishermen.

Prolific hatches of march browns and caddis have been appearing all week and fishermen are taking lots of fish which includes larger ones.

Most productive patterns are the march brown Haystack, tan and brown caddis and stimulators. Water temperature is in the low 60s and the level is slightly low but fishing remains great. Weather forecast is for a very nice weekend with warm temperatures. We did not get the bad storm that occurred around Albany last night. Just enough rain to refresh the river nicely.

What a great weekend it was for fishing. Even though we had a little cold front come through but fish were rising to prolific hatches of stoneflies, caddis, blue wing olives and march browns. A number of 20 inch fish were reported caught and released and several more in the 15 to 18 inch range were caught. Another stocking is due tomorrow of fish up to 15 inches. Catch and Release area has been producing exceptionally well.

Big producers for t he week were stimulators with peacock and orange body, tan caddis with yellow body and light cream Haystacks.

Temperatures should reach into the mid 60s today with some showers predicted tomorrow to refresh the river. Then mid 70s on Wednesday with sunshine. River level couldn't be any better and water temps are in the mid 60s.

Although we had some rain yesterday which brought the river up about 3 inches last night, it is right back down today to a very wadable condition. There are lots of caddis producing great fish, despite the windy conditions. Both pocket water and slower waters have been productive with lots of fish from 15 to 16 inch fish.

Patterns to use are tan caddis with yellow body, gray caddis with olive body, orange body stimulators and size 10 and 12 black and golden stonefly nymphs.

The warm weather has, as predicted, brought on prolific hatches. Lots of March Browns, tan Caddis with yellow bodies and also dun caddis. A few Hendricksons are still around on the upper end of the river. Catch and Release area is producing very well with many large trout reported.

Water level is actually a bit low but we have showers reported today and tomorrow so river will be nicely refreshed. Many anglers who came in from down south reported driving through torrential rains and flash flood warnings. This weather did not make it up here to our area. River is in good shape.

The Ausable is alive with hatches including March Browns, lots of tan caddis and dun caddis. Reports of good catches of trout from 14 to 16 inches, and a few topping 20 inches. Biggest fish of the week was 22 inches taken on a large golden stonefly nympf. This fly has been producing many good fish in the past week. Most productive patterns have been this golden stone, march brown Haystack, tan and dun caddis, Ausable Caddis, Ausable Wulff and stimulators.

Water level is now perfect and the temperature is in the low sixties, making for ideal conditions.

The AuSable has finally come alive. Prolific hatches of caddis, march browns and Hendricksons (they are still here). have put smiles on the faces of the Memorial day fishermen. Many are happy with their catches in the twelve to sixteen inch range and a few larger trout have also been taken. One lucky fisherman caught and released a beautiful four pound brown.

Water temperature has climbed to the high 50s and should push over the 60 degree level in the next couple days. This is the ideal temperature for dry fly fishing, increasing the trout's metabolism and their appetite.

River is in perfect condition and hatches are coming off heavy. Water temperature is in the high 50s and Caddis, Hendricksons and March Browns are coming off. Most productive patterns are the March Brown and Hendrickson Haystacks, stimulators and gray caddis. These have all been producing well. AuSable Wulff still the ñbig dogî.

We are finally looking at some warm weather which should begin tomorrow and last through the weekend, if the weather gods are with us! Despite the colder temperatures, the fish have been hitting very well beneath the surface. However, with seventies due tomorrow and for the next few days, action will start on top. Hendricksons and caddis are in the water and in a week or so, we should see some March Browns. Top producing fly for the week continues to be the orange body picket finn.

DON'T FORGET: Saturday, the 25th will be our first free fly fishing clinic and BBQ so make plans to come by the shop around 1:00 in the afternoon.

The Two Fly contestants started off in a flurry of late season snow. Luckily, by afternoon, sun was peeking out, even though the temperatures were chilly.

Beadhead picket finns and green caddis emergers continued to be the flies of the week as nothing was rising to dries. The next few days should produce Hendricksons on the surface, provided we get a bit of a warming trend. Keep your fingers crossed!

May 16, 2002

Today the weather has finally given us a break. The temperature will be approaching 70's. The high water in the river has receded bring the river to a good fishable condition. By tomorrow the river should be wadable. Hendersons and Caddis will be coming off and fly fishing will be able to take them on dries again. Although water was high yesterday some good size trout were taken by the persistent fishermen. Best patterns are Mini-muddlers, Dun Haystacks, Picket Finns, and Hendrickson Emergers. The river will be stocked again tomorrow with trout up to 15 inches. Expect a great weekend ahead. Things are looking good for the Two-Fly Contest on Saturday, May 18th.

May 9, 2002

Water temperature has climbed to 52 degrees. Hendricksons and caddis are coming off. Fishing is starting to take off nicely. The four patterns producing well are the Hendrickson emerger, dun Haystack, Hendrickson spinner and green caddis emergers.

We are due some showers today but nothing that should bring the level up very much. It is at a perfect level and very wadable. Weekend is looking good with sunshine and temperatures in the mid 60s.

REMEMBER: Licenses are now available at our shop from 7 am until 10 pm and later.

May 4, 2002

Today is a beautiful day and the river is in the best condition it has been all Spring. Water level dropped a couple inches overnight but still running around 40 degrees. Air temp to go to low 60s today so hopefully, it will begin to warm. The fish are trying to get more active.

Coneheads are still the most productive but look for sedges and Hendricksons to be on the surface with a couple days of warm weather. Some nice trout are being taken and the season looks as if it may finally be under way.

Both air and water temperature trying to warm up. Water is hovering around 40 degrees, depending on what part of the river you take it. The ones who have braved the colder weather and rain/snow flurries have been catching some nice fish. Nothing on top as yet but if the weather report for the weekend is correct, we should see sun and temps around 60. Water level is perfect right now.

Ponds are still producing quite well.

Patterns working best are still the conehead wooly buggers and conehead picket finns. If we do get the warmer temperatures this weekend, small sedge emergers and perhaps the dries will work along with the dun Haystack which imitates the Hendrickson dun.

April 28, 2002

River is in great wadable shape even though the water temperature is still in the low 40s. Air temp is still pretty chilly although Saturday we saw a lot of beautiful sunshine. Hopefully, the prediction of snow for Sunday will be wrong.

Fishing has been great however, and a number of fish were taken Saturday, including a 24 incher. Not much on the surface as yet and Coneheads continue to be the big producer. A few warm days will bring on the Hendricksons.

Ponds continue to produce well yielding rainbows and brook trout on the surface. Keep the faith - things should break loose real soon!

It's a beautiful day in the Adirondacks. The AuSable is at a perfect level with a water temperature in the low 40s. Air temps should reach the mid sixties. There are Hendrickson nymphs in the water and all looks good for the weekend.

Ponds are fishing very well with brookies and rainbows being caught up to 16 inches.

Yesterday was the day of the big earthquake here in the Adirondacks.æ A surprise for everyone including the fish.æ Water temperature is 48 degrees and the water level has dropped to a good level.æ The river is now wadable with some degree of caution and conditions look good for the next few days.æ Hendrickson nymphs and caddis in the water point to some early hatches coming off - probably in about a week.æ Some fish taken over the weekend on coneheads and beadheads nymphs.æ A couple of two pounders were reported taken and released in the catch and release area.æ Ponds are open and great fishing for brookies and rainbows right now.æ One of my guides took some beautiful brookies up to fifteen inches yesterday on one of the ponds.æ You can expect the pond and lake fishing to continue for the next couple of weeks before the temperature warms and the fish head for the deeper water.

River is still high but has dropped a about a foot in the past day or so. It is wadable in limited sections but fishable from the shore. Choose the backwaters and eddies.

Weather forecast is for showers tonight and tomorrow and dropping temperatures. High this weekend should be in the mid fifties.

April 17, 2002

The temperature reached the high 80s today but the river is still unwadable but fishable from the shore in those backwaters and eddies. The ponds have opened, however, and this is an ideal time to go after lakers and brookies that will be near the surface. One of the guides has taken speckles up to two pounds.

Today, there were numerous insects in the air. I expect the Hendricksons early this year. But right now, fish are hitting underneath on bait, spinners, streamers and coneheads. Keep the faith! Conditions are looking better for the weekend.

April 15, 2002

River is still very high but it did drop about four inches overnite. Forecast is for sun and unseasonably warm temperatures for most of the upcoming week. The river should settle by the middle of the week as most of the snow has run off the mountains. Some fish will be taken by those who know how to pick the slower pockets and eddies along the bank.

The Saranac is producing well and there are some salmon at the lower sections of the rivers. April 14, 2002

Rain most of Saturday night brought heavy runoff and the river is full bank. It is unwadable at this point. Only showers are predicted for the next 24 hours or so with sun right around the corner. The water level will go down pretty fast as the AuSable always does, It should be wadable by Wednesday providing we have no more heavy rains. The run-off from the snow in the high peaks has brought the river up about a foot but the river is still very ishable and wadable with caution. A number of fish are being taken on both bait and on conehead wooly buggers and picket finns fished deep. The famous Flume Pool has produced a half dozen large trout already this season. Some stocking has already taken place with more scheduled for the coming week.

The Adirondack Sport Shop has nearly doubled its stock this year and has added about 200 new rods and reels at some great early season prices. We also have a good selection of used bamboo rods that include Payne, Gillum, Orvis, Thomas and many others. We have four licensed guides available that are also certified instructors ready to give a FREE fly casting lesson on request. We are looking for another guide to add to our staff.

Some of the ponds are starting to open and should be good to fish in another week. A great time to go after some nice Brookies. For booking a guide for a full or half day trip, do so in advance as we are getting lots of bookings already. Last year was a great year and this looks like a repeat with lots of fish in the river. The light drizzle the past couple days has brought the water level up about two feet, making the river quite muddy and not wadable. The level should recede in a day or two and by the weekend, conditions should improve quite a bit. Before the rain, however, our guides have had some success with clients, taking a couple good sized browns and smaller fish as well. Most were taken on crystal wooly buggers and mallard wing bead picket finns fished slowly underneath.

The warmer weather resulted in less ice buildup in the ponds as some of them already show signs of open water. Good time to set up a trip for some nice early season brook trout fishing. For any questions, feel free to call me at 518-946-2605.

Weather forecast for the next several days is for temperatures in the 60 degree range and lots of sunshine so things should steadily improve and the weekend just might be a ñbeautiful thingî as far as fishing.

The river is in great condition but the temperature has remained cold. A number of good trout were taken the past couple of days. Wooly Buggers and coneheads are producing the best. Both the Saranac and sections of the AuSable are stocked this week. No snow along the river bank and river is very wadable. Snow flurries over the last two days but none on the ground. A warming trend forecast for the next few days. If you are planning a fishing trip to the AuSable, bring warm clothes and your insulated underwear.

April 4, 2002

Some rain yesterday brought the river up about two inches but it is still in great condition and wadable. Snow in the high peaks and colder weather hasn't contributed to comfortable fishing conditions and there are snow flurries now as I write this. The forecast for the weekend is for warmer and sunny weather. This should produce a nice weekend of fishing on both the AuSable and the Saranac. A few die hards on the river yesterday managed to take a few fish but no reports of any lunkers. One of my guides took a nice fat 16 inch brown and two of the guides are taking out clients tomorrow. Everything taken so far has been either on bait or black or gold conehead wooly buggers fished along the bottom. A few inches of added snow on the mountains to go along with the foot or two in the high peak region will insure good water conditions throughout the month. There should be hatches coming off in a week to ten days if the warming trend continues. The new stocking reports received yesterday indicate nearly 40,000 Browns and Rainbows will be stocked in the Ausable during the months of April, May and June. The fish will range from 8î to 15î. Other stockings of brook trout will take place in many of the brooks and smaller streams in the region along with stocking in the lakes and ponds. For a more detailed report on the stocking, stop in at the shop when you come up and I can give you additional information. The first stockings are scheduled to take place soon but don't have the exact date yet. Will keep you posted.

The first day of the season on the Ausable was a success for those who braved the drizzle. One gentleman who drove up from Saratoga managed to take five beautiful Browns -keeping the larger one about 16 inches and returning the others. There weren't many fishermen on the river because of the rainy weather but most of those who did fish caught at least one. A number of fishermen came down from Montreal to pick up flies, vests etc. and to check out the stream. One of the men fished for an hour and took a nice 17 incher from the Flume Pool.

Today, the weather is clean and beautiful and the river looks great. Temperature dropped to 37 last night but is back in the 40s this morning. Most productive fly on opening day was a conehead crystal bugger fished along the bottom. Snowed on the high peaks last night and the melt will contribute to the water tables and keep the river in excellent condition. Have already booked over 40 guide parties for the season so get your trips scheduled early to reserve your day. No stocking schedule yet but river has plenty of fish. Forecast for the next couple of days is cooler with chance of some rain later today and tomorrow. Then clearing and a bit cooler. We'll hope for warmer temps by the weekend.

THE OPENING DAY OF THE SEASON ON THE AUSABLE FINDS THE RIVER IN THE BEST OPENING DAY CONDITION SEEN IN MANY YEARS. THE WATER LEVEL IS IDEAL WITH ALL THE ICE GONE AND THE ENTIRE RIVER VERY WADABLE. THIS WAS ABOUT A WEEK TO TEN DAYS AHEAD OF THE USUAL HATCH DATE FOR THESE FLIES. Pre Season Fishing Forecast 2002

Two weeks before the season opens on the West Branch of the AuSable, the river is in its best pre-season condition in many years. Most of the ice is out and the water level is normal. Everything looks like there might be some good fly fishing early on and a couple weeks of warm weather in April may just produce some dry fly fishing. This year could well be a repeat of the early fly fishing we saw two years ago when the Hendrickson appeared the last week in April and fish were already taking dries the third week of April. Normally, the dry fly fishing doesn't get under way until the first week of May. Barring a quick reversal in conditions, we can expect stonefly nymphs, mini-muddlers and beadheads to produce right from the get go on opening day. I will be doing the daily river update beginning the first of April which will give you water levels, temperature and the stream conditions on both the AuSable and the Saranac. This year you will also have access to a new fly pattern every month along with the most productive patterns for that time period. New patterns not already listed will have the recipes so those of you who tie will have the correct pattern to download for your fly Cookbook.

For those who visited us last season, you saw that we had updated the format of the shop, did a lot of remodeling and added a host of new merchandise. This year we are going even further with new products, great prices and a range of great new fly rods and equipment at very low prices. My custom rods will still be on special at all our clinics and barbeques. FREE fly casting lessons will be available every day upon request along with any other helpful information you might need. Once the season is underway, we are usually open until about 11 every evening. We always provide free coffee and snacks while you browse through our new lines of merchandise or wait for a custom fly to be tied for you. One of the new features that you will like especially well is an embroidery department headed up by my daughter with a state of the art embroidery machine. She will put a logo of your choosing and your name on a hat or shirt while you wait. There will be literally hundreds of logos to choose from. A Rainbow trout, Brown Trout or a colorful Mayfly or AuSable Wulff will certainly catch the eye.

Another new feature will be the addition of a salt water section featuring flies for all species of salt water fish - all custom tied. This past season in Florida Keys was a very productive one with good catches of a variety of fish on flies. New salt water rods ranging all the way up to 14 weight will be available or can be custom ordered at big savings. Another feature we are contemplating is a book section that not only will feature my own books but those of many other well known writers to enhance your own library.

This past weekend (Oct 13 and 14) gave us some beautiful weather conditions to end the regular fishing season on the Ausable. Trout are still taking Isonychia parachutes, dark dun haystacks, blue winged olives and Ausable Wulffs on the surface and the best fishing is still from mid day until evening hours. Remember the Catch and Release section is open all year and you can expect good fishing well into the first week in November. The salmon fishing on the lower sections of the river has not produced as well as expected because of the low water conditions. Some fish have come into the river but lack of water in the stream has not produced the expected runs of fish that normally come up the river to spawn. A couple days of rain could change this however and produce some good fishing ahead.

NOTE: Our annual pig roast with all the trimmings was a great success with everyone but the pig having a great time. Great music was supplied by T.J. Swan and Mo, adding a great touch to the festive occasion. A full belly of Mr. Pig, a large array of salads, pies, cakes and free beer along with dozens of door prizes and a 20% discount on everything in the store served to send everyone home happy. River remains in excellent condition with water temp in the mid 50s. Level is perfect. Isonychia Parachutes and dun Haystacks producing throughout the day. Rusty olive spinners also producing well with a number of bigger fish being taken on AuSable Bombers and AuSable Wulffs.

Some salmon being taken in the lower sections of the river and predicted rainfall and colder temperatures over the next few days will bring more numbers of these fish in. Ideal Fall conditions produce best fishing during afternoon hours so you don't have to get up early. Sleep in and fish during the mid part of the day. It appears the colors will be at peak this weekend so your fishing will be done in the most picturesque conditions possible.

The river is in excellent condition with normal water level for this time of year and water temperatures in the mid fifties. Best fishing hours are afternoon from one til 6 in the evening. Still hatches of Isonychia and blue winged olives and some caddis coming off. Our guides have been kept busy with satisfied clients taking some good sized fish on Haystacks, Isonychia parachutes and olives. Morning fishing is most productive using beadhead picket finns and beadhead orange bodies variations of the same pattern. Fishing is good and river conditions are great along with the beauty of the fall season providing a panorama of color for a backdrop, Its the most beautiful time of the year to fish and the fish are feeding and fattening up for the winter making it one of my favorite times to be on the water. A number of Salmon have come into the lower sections of the stream so its a good time to try for a Atlantic Salmon on the lower Ausable, the Saranac or the Bouquet. AuSable River level is about three inches above normal but fishing is quite good with good afternoon hatches. Water clarity is good and trout are taking both on the surface and underneath. Isonychias and caddis make up the bulk of the hatches that are coming off. Most productive patterns are still Isonychia parachute and dark dun Haystacks. Other patterns that work well are the beadhead picket finn, rusty beadhead mini muddler and Isonychia emerger.

Great news for the salmon fishermen. The salmon are now coming into the rivers in good numbers and our guides reported catches of the smaller fish in the four to five pound range taken by our clients yesterday. Salmon fishing should remain good for the next five to six weeks with smelt patterns producing the best. Lower sections of the Saranac, AuSable and Bouquet producing well. September 24, 2001

The Ausable River is fishing great right now with good hatches of Isonychia and olives coming off. Best fishing is during the afternoon and evening hours in the faster water sections of the stream - pockets and around boulders doing very good. Most productive flies are the dark dun Haystack in dark dun and rust brown colors, the Isonychia parachute and Isonychia emergers fished with a swimming action in the ripples and around the boulders. Lots of fish being taken with a respectable number of 16 to 20 inch Browns. Fishing should remain good into mid October. Rain is forecast for the next couple of days and if we don't get an excessive amount, the fishing can only get better as the Isonychia hatches always increase with rainy afternoons and cooler temperatures.

The rain should also bring more Salmon into the lower sections of the rivers and provide some excellent Salmon runs on the Saranac, the lower Ausable and the Bouquet over the next month. September 20, 2001

Water level is still low but forecast is for some rain showers which should help river level this weekend. Fishing is still quite good with good hatches of Isonychia, caddis and olives. Rain should increase the hatches of Isonychias, making the fishing conditions even better than they are right now. Most productive patterns are the dark dun Haystack in size 12 & 14, Isonychia parachutes in size 12 & 14, Isonychia emergers size 12 and AuSable Wulffs still accounting for good numbers of the larger fish. Next two weekends should see some of the best fishing of the season. Trout are active and fattening up for the winter. Remember to concentrate your efforts on the fast pocket water as this is where the best fish are being taken.

*NOTE: The forecast rain should also bring in runs of salmon on the lower sections of the streams.

September 18, 2001

The river is very low but the water temperature is ideal for great fall fishing;. The cool nights and warm afternoons have made for the usual good September fishing conditions. 58 degree water brings out good hatches of Isonychia and caddis as well as blue winged olives. Best fishing is from one in the afternoon until just before dark. The larger fish are being taken in the pocket water and the faster sections of the stream. The hot flies right now are the Isonychia parachute and the dark dun haystack patterns in sizes 12 and 14. Ausable Wulffs are still taking some of the larger (16 - 20 inch) fish and a good number of smaller fish on the olives. The Isonychia emergers are also producing well. Keep in mind that the Isonychia is a fast swimming insect and fishing both the emerger and the dry imitations will produce better if fishing in the currents and around the boulders with a slight swimming action imparted to the fly. This skittering action also works well when fishing the Ausable Wulff in the heavier water since it gets the trout's attention and imparts some life to the fly. If you are more inclined to fish the slow or still waters of the catch and release area, you will do well with smaller dun Haystacks (size 16) and small blue winged olives and tiny Usuals..

NOTE: Since the river are very low, the Salmon have not as yet started to come into the Bouquet, the Ausable or the Saranac. As soon as we get rain, they will begin to come into the lower sections of the rivers. Expect this to happen within the next week. If you plan on booking for a Salmon guide I suggest waiting until the last week of September or the first two weeks of October. This is usually the best time - when the fish first begin coming into the streams. I expect a good Salmon run this year as the water temperatures already in a good range to bring in the fish I have guides available for float trips for Salmon but book early as we get lots of requests once the fish start running.

The river is fishing great right now. Although water level is low, the water temperature is ideal for hatches. Good hatches of Isonychia Bicolors and Caddis coming off and some olives as well. Isonychia parachutes, dark dun haystacks, and Isonychia emergers working best. Some large fish are also being taken by size 12 Ausable Wulffs. DON'T FORGET WE ARE HAVING A FREE BAR-B-QUE AND FLY FISHING CLINIC AGAIN ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22. Great food and free Ausable Wulff beer along with lots of good specials on all custom rods as well as close outs on trade ins. We have Orvis, Loomis, Sage trade ins and a closeout on all St Croix Legend rods.

September 11, 2001

The river is in perfect condition with water temperature in the high fifties to low 60s. We got a refreshing bit of rain Monday and temperatures cooling down after some hot weather over the weekend. Big hatches of Isonychia and caddis coming off makes for some of the best fishing all year. Clients have been regularly catching trout from 12 to 16 inches with a fair number of 15 to 20 inchers taken. Largest was a 21 inch brown taken last evening and a much larger fish lost before it could be netted and released. Only four patterns necessary to catch fish now. They are the Isonychia parachute, the dark dun haystack, the Isonychia nymph and the Ausable Wulff. For those fishing the slow sections, the small olive duns and olive spinners work well but the best fishing for the larger fish is in the faster currents and pockets of the stream. All of the large fish (those over 19 inches) were caught on the always reliable Ausable Wulff in the faster sections of the river. The whole river is producing well right now and should remain this way throughout the month. We have added another guide to take care of the great demand during September and October. We also will be doing float trips for the Landlocked Salmon on the Saranac, the Ausable and the Bouquet so book early. As soon as we get some fall rains and the water temperature drops a little more, we will get Salmon coming into the rivers. The river is in perfect condition with water temperature in the high fifties to low 60s. Big hatches of Isonychia and caddis coming off makes for some of the best fishing all year. Clients have been regularly catching trout from 12 to 16 inches with a fair number of 15 to 20 inchers taken. Largest was a 21 inch brown taken last evening and a much larger fish lost before it could be netted and released. Only four patterns necessary to catch fish now. They are the Isonychia parachute, the dark dun haystack, the Isonychia nymph and the Ausable Wulff. For those fishing the slow sections, the small olive duns and olive spinners work well but the best fishing for the larger fish is in the faster currents and pockets of the stream. All of the large fish (those over 19 inches) were caught on the always reliable Ausable Wulff in the faster sections of the river. The whole river is producing well right now and should remain this way throughout the month. We have added another guide to take care of the great demand during September and October. We also will be doing float trips for the Landlocked Salmon on the Saranac, the Ausable and the Bouquet so book early. As soon as we get some fall rains and the water temperature drops a little more, we will get Salmon coming into the rivers. Heavy rains this past Friday brought the river up about a foot making it difficult wading and fly fishing on Saturday. Since then the river has dropped to a normal level and good hatches are starting to come back off the waters. Trout are again taking flies on the surface; good hatches of Isonychia and Caddis emerging. Fishing conditions are ideal. Water level is perfect and water temperature ranges from 58 to 62 degrees. September is a perfect fly fishing month. The choice of the knowledgeable fisherman on the river. Most productive patterns are dark Haystack for the Isonychia Dun, Isonychia Parachute patterns, Isonychia Nymph, Beadhead Picket Finns, Ausable Wulffs and Blue Wing Olives. September and October fishing make the selection of flies easy for you. You can fish these patterns exclusively from September 1 to the end of October and rarely need any others to take fish. The rains of the past couple days have given the river a fresh supply of water bringing the level to perfect condition. The river was very low but now it's at early September level. Great hatches of Isonychia have been coming off along with lots of olives. Fishing is best in the late morning hours and afternoon hours from two until dark. Cold nights have lowered the water temperature to a range of 58 to 62 degrees making for great fishing. The hot days of the past few weeks had the fish in the catch and release area pretty stressed out but they are returning to a more active state. This weekend should provide great fishing with Isonychia parachutes, dark Haystacks, Ausable Wulffs and Olives being the best producers. For those who want to fish the slower sections , the size 18 trico and olive spinners will work fine. Isonychia nymphs fishing with a fast retrieve on the surface also are working well,.

The entire month of August has been exceptional fishing despite the hot periods. The best indicator was the number of large trout taken and the doubling of fly sales during the month. I would rate this season so far as the best we have had in the past 20 years for the number of large trout caught.

The cooler nights and recent showers have made for some very good fishing on the river. Our guides and their clients have experienced some excellent fishing the past few days with some nice catches of trout in the 14 to 16 inch range. One 24 inch Brown was taken also topping off the week. Hatches are the Pumpkin Caddis, some Isonychia coming off and lots of caddis and some blue winged olives. Most productive patterns are the Ausable Caddis, the Pumpkin caddis, small dun caddis and blue winged olives. Best fishing results have been in the faster pocket water and faster water sections of the stream. Trout have been pretty stressed out on the catch and release section of the stream from the repeated catching and release along with the hot weather so concentrate on the faster moving water area of the stream. River is low but in great shape for August. This has been a fantastic season of fishing and September looks great. The dark dun Haystack with the reddish brown body and the Isonychia parachute pattern are the best imitations for the Isonychia and they are already taking lots of fish. NOTE: If you plan on reserving a guide with us in September, please do so soon as we are filling up quickly. I have only four guide/Instructors available for guiding in September and one hunting guide (bird and fishing combo) and will be training more guides for next season. The cooler nights and more pleasant days have lowered the water temperature in the river and has produced some good fishing days . Water temperature this morning was a cool 62 degrees and we have some good hatches of Isonychia the past couple of nights. Also caddis and some blue winged olives. All four of our guides have been busy every day with clients and the early morning and late evening hours have been the most productive. One success story was Leslie Ann Cloper with a beautiful 20 inch wild Brown taken on an Ausable Wulff. Leslie is from Port Jefferson Station in N.Y. and she was fishing with Bill, one of my guides who also owns and operates the Bunkhouse lodge in Wilmington. Last evening, another of our guides put a young lady from Chicago onto a fat 22 inch brown but it broke off just before the net was put under the fish. For those of you who are looking for a special treat, try a combination of grouse or duck hunting in the morning and fishing for large Browns in the afternoon. Reserve early as we are already getting booked for September. Remember that September is the best fishing month of the year with the Isonychia hatches coming on strong. It's also a favorite time among the fishermen since they don't have to get up early to catch the best fishing. The fishing is best during the afternoon and evening hatches. The Ausable is still low but rain forecast likely to bring the river back to a more normal level. Water temperature ranging from 69 to high 70's. Out guides have had good success with clients taking some nice sized trout. Best fishing has been in the evening from seven til dark. Patterns producing well are the size 16 dun haystacks with olive body, the small dun olive caddis and the size 16 Ausable Wulff in the pocket water and faster sections of the stream. Although the river is quite low, the water temperature have been ranging from 69 to the mid 70s - depending on where you elect to fish. Surprisingly, the fishing has been quite good with lots of fish being taken. Our guides have been extremely busy and lots of satisfied customers. This week they could boast one fat 20 incher, a half dozen fish in the 16 to 19 inch range. Most taken in the late evening hours from 7 to nine thirty. Lots of large stone flies coming off along with lots of small caddis and some blue winged olives. All of the large fish caught this week by our clients were taken on an AuSable Wulff of large size 8 stimulator with the orange body. Most of the smaller fish were taken on a small size 16 dun haystack with an olive body. For those not in the know, there is always good fishing to be found on the Ausable if you know where and what time to fish. Even on the hottest days and the low water conditions, you can find good fishing. The Au Sable River is low but the fishing has been superb. Water temp is ranging from 65 to 69 degrees with lots of caddis hatches. Mostly brown caddis and dun caddis with orange bodies. Reported catch and releases of 15 to 20 fish by the fishermen yesterday. A little rain last evening freshened the stream up and put fish on the feed again. Best producing patterns were the size 16 dun caddis, brown caddis and Au Sable caddis along with stimulators with orange bodies in the late evening hours. The success story of the week was a young lady from Montreal who went out with one of my guides and landed a beautiful 20 inch native Brown. Needles to say, she is now a dedicated fly fisherwoman. Although the water level is low in the stream, the fishing has been great with good hatches of caddis and stoneflies along with lots of blue winged olives and some cremes.æ Our four guide-instructors have been out straightwith clients and have recorded some good catches of 15 to 18 inch fish. The catch of the week was a fat 20 inch brown by a ten year old on a black gnat with a red tail that I had given the young fisherman an hour before. His father is having the fish mounted for him. This made his fishing trip and my week. Most productive patterns are the Au Sable Caddis, the olive dun caddis, yellow sally, size 10 stimulator and the rusty orange caddis. Au SableWulffs are always a good producer in fast water. We have been extremely busy, we are guides for many of the IRONMAN participants prior to the big event this Sunday. Thunderstorms and cold wave pushing through the area brought the river level up a few inches and water temp back into the 50s. Fishing was slow last evening but has picked up again today and the trout are quite active again. This added water to the river and the lower temp will continue to assure that we have some good water conditions well through July. This refreshing of the stream makes ideal fishing conditions. This year is pretty much a repeat of conditions last season. Great water temperatures in the 50s and 60s keep trout active. This morning our guides were out and the clients did good fishing beadheads and small streamers until 10:00 and then the fish started coming to Usuals with the sulphur bodies. Afternoon sulphur hatches and large cream varient haystacks in the evening will produce good results for the next week or two. For early morning fishing when the nights are cold, use beadhead picket finns with the orange body. They will always produce well in the faster water. Use large simulators ( size 10 with orange bodies) for late evening fishing. I have tied about 1000 of these in the past couple of weeks and they have been the hot flies for this time. River is back to a perfect level for fly fishing. Good hatches are coming off both in the morning and evening. Large stoneflies and small yellow sallies (which is a small stone fly). Lots of caddis coming off. Also, large hexes are just starting to come off the ponds and lakes. Fishermen are taking lots of fish in the fourteen to eighteen inch range on large stimulators tied with an orange body and the small yellow sally with a yellow body. River in excellent condition...back to good wading. Lots of yellow sallies and stoneflies coming off. Yesterday was fantastic fishing with lots of trout taken, even though wading was difficult. Hot flies are orange bodied stimulators, AuSable Wulff and yellow sallies. Lots of fishermen took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and were rewarded with nice catches of fish. Looking good for this entire week. The much needed rain over the past weekend rejuvenated the river.

For those not familiar with the AuSable, the steep gradient of the river (drop in elevation) allows the high water to run off quickly, usually within one to two days, getting the river back to normal in short order. This past weekend was pretty much a wash-out on the river with the heavy rain we had a Friday night. The river was unfishable with the exception of a few adventurous spirits who fished the eddies and backwater sections near the shore. Today the river has receded 2 feet from last night and is clear and fishable again. It will drop further today and tonight making it wadable by tomorrow and there should be some excellent hatches coming off the remainder of the week. The Saranac River is also in good shape and there is some good fishing there also. Best fly patterns for now are the ever productive Au Sable Wulff in size 12 and 14, golden caddis size 14, large simulators with orange bodies size 10 and 12 and the creme goddard caddis size 12 and14. These will be your most productive flies for the coming week. Also look for some Pothamatus (creme varients) to be coming off soon. Our FREE bbq and fly fishing clinic was attended by about 40 people despite the heavy rain and we were still able to do the casting lessons and enjoy the great home cooked chicken and salads along with the Au Sable Wulff Red Ale supplied by the Steak and Seafood reasturant. River is back to normal level again after the rain Friday night. The hatches of Green Drake Spinners were abundant again last night with good hatches of Yellow Sallies and tan caddis. Our guides were busy all weekend with some good catches of trout ranging from 16 to 20 inches. Most of these were taken on a size 12 Au Sable wulff and large Coffin Haystack pattern of the Green Drake. The fly of the week is the Yellow Sally (tied as follows) Tail tied with gold en yellow hackle, same hackleribbed over golden yellow dubbing for the body. A dyed golden yellow deer hair wing and with cream hackle wound in front of the eye, tied off with red thread. This fly has been a killer this week. Expect great fishing all week with the river in great shape.

Much needed rain brought the river from an extremely low level to a more normal position. River rose four to five inches which will continue to provide excellent fishing and more comfortable temperatures for the fish. Good hatches of green drakes in the evening and and lots of caddis and stone flies. Patterns producing well are still the AuSable Wulff in sizes 12 and 14, tan caddis in sizes 14 & 16, golden stone fly nymphs and green drake emergers in the evening. GREEN DRAKE IN FULL BLOOM! Spinners coming off to lay eggs on the river last night at dusk. Fish are in a feeding frenzy! Green Drake hatch should be around another week. My guides took clients out last evening for an exceptioal night of fishing. Fish taken were in the 17-18 inch with one large 22-24 incher hooked but loss. Those fishing this hatch should keep in mind that the spinner come down after dark so if you go to early you will miss them. Best fishing of the year, use Green Drake, spinners, large white haystack pattern with badger tail with white dubbing for body. It should be tied in size 10-12, no smaller. Another day of great fishing on both the AuSable and the Saranac. Water temp in the low 60s and river slightly low and easily wadable. Today is a overcast day, about 62 degrees. This weeks favorite place to fish was on both the Au Sable and the Saranac. Few Green Drakes coming off other hatches include light cahills, caddis and a few March browns are still around . By the weeks end Green Drakes will be plentiful. THE GREEN DRAKES HAVE LANDED!! Yesterday, our guides and their clients located the first few of the Green Drakes coming off on the lower section of the river. By this weekend, the hatches should be more evident and you can expect some good fishing on both the duns and the spinners. River condition is perfect and water temperatures in the fifties and air temperature to 70 degrees today. A beautiful five pounder was taken and released on a size 8 AuSable Wulff yesterday. Hot flies for the day are the AuSable Wulff, mostly size 14, golden caddis, March Brown Haystacks and blond wulffs are also producing well. Smaller irresistibles also were working well yesterday. Today is a nice sunny but cool day. Fly hatches includes the Brown Caddis and Tan Cadddis, March Browns are still coming off. River level is good- fishing is excellent. A friend from New Jersy that has been fishing the Au Sable for 16 years reported that he had the best day of fishing ever. He caught and released 5 fish, all over 17 inches and taken on the Au Sable Wulff size 10. Most productive fly of the week has been the Golden Caddis. I sold more than 500 in the past week. Most productive patterns, March Brown Haystacks, Au Sable Wulff, Golden Caddis, small coneheadsand Picket Finns. Green Drake has been spotted on the Saranac. The Green Drake on the Saranac, usually appear 5-6 days ahead of the hatches on the Au Sable. Hopefully, we will see hatches coming off on the river by the weekend if the water temp. heats up. Fishing conditions are excellent on the river. Water temperature in the low 50s with March Browns and lots of tan and brown caddis coming off. Lots of big fish taken on the Au Sable Wulff size 10, Au Sable Caddis, brown caddis and March Brown Haystack. Some drakes seen coming off on the Saranac. Green Drake hatch about 5 or 6 days away. Today is like yesterday, great day for fishing the river. The river is at its normal level. Temperture should be in the low 60s today. March browns hatches are coming off. The orange body coneheads are doing great ,taking lots of fish. Au Sable Wulff size 10 are catching some big fish. Sorry for any inconvience with Route 86 being shut down until 1:00. Fishing is great, water level is normal. The river is looking good. Hot flies are the golden caddis, Au Sable Wulff size 10, haystack patterna and dunns. Orange body coneheads are taking lots of fish in the fast water. Hotline number to call is (518) 946-2605.

Weather is sunny but cold, temperature in the low 60s today. River level is normal. Hatches coming off are the March browns and tan caddis, fishing is very good. Productive patterns are the orange body coneheads, golden caddis size 14 and the Au Sable Wulff size 10 also March brown haystacks size 12, are all producing well. Today is a repeat of yesterday. Weather is alternately sunny and showers. Not the best day for camping but great for fishing. The river level went down 3 inches last night and it should be another good day of fishing. The big producers yesterday were the size 10 Au Sable Wulff, the cone head picket finn, March brown, haystack and the sparrow streamer. Should work well again today. MAY 29, 2001

Today has started with some sun but a chance of showers. River in great condition with level up about three inches. March Browns and caddis coming off in the afternoons and evenings. Both the AuSable and the Saranac are fishing good with lots of nice trout taken on AuSable Wulffs, March Brown Haystacks and tan caddis. Golden Stonefly nymphs in sizes 10 & 8 also producing well. Although weekend was overcast and drizzly, lots of large fish were taken. A 22 incher and several 20 and 21 inchers were taken. The rainy overcast weather over the weekend and following through today has resulted in more phenomenal fly fishing on the AuSable and the Saranac. Good hatches of March Browns and caddis coming off and still some Hendricksons left make for good dry fly fishing. March Brown Haystacks, AuSable Wulffs, and tan caddis are the big producers. Overcast, rainy weekend has produced phenomenal fishing. River is in excellent shape, more to the low side. March Browns are coming off with lots of caddis. Flies producing the best for large fish are size 10 & 12 AuSable Wulffs, size 12 March Brown Haystacks, tan caddis, AuSable Caddis and the Usual. Our first free clinic and BBQ was a great success with 75 or so participants attending. Please plan on joining us for the next one scheduled for June 9 which should be around the beginning of the famous Green Drake hatch.

MAY 26, 2001

River is in great conditions and the trout are rising to dries producing some excellent fishing. Hendricksons still coming off upper sections of the river and March Browns made their appearances on the lower section of the stream. Lots of large trout taken on Au Sable Wulffs and March brown Haystacks. Size 14 dun haystacks still the hot flies as tan Usuals and caddis. Althought rain was forecast, the weather is alternately sunny and cloudy making good fishing weather. Conditions are perfect for great fishing. Today is another day of great fishing on both the Ausable and Saranac. Lots of caddis coming off and still good hatches of Hendricksons. The main producers of large trout yesterday were the size 10 Ausable Wulff, the Aysable Caddis, and lots of fish taken on the size 14 Usual and the dun Haystack size 14. A number of fish 17 to 20 inch range reported in the Catch and Release section. Rest of the river producing well. First an apology for not getting to my update yesterday. We were busy outfitting customers and needless to say the fishing was fantastic. Overcast and drizzly day produced lots of large fish- nearly all taken on the large Ausable Wulff. Today is much the same- overcast and partly sunny and drizzly. Lots of Hendricksons and tan caddis coming off. Three most productive patterns are the Ausable Wulff, the dun caddis, haystack and the usual with a tan body. Another fly producing well is the parachute dun. River in great condition and everything perfect for a good weekend of fishing. Don' forget we are having our first of the season, FREE clinic and BBQ Saturday with lots of home cooked food with talk and casting instructions by myself and my experienced staff. Today is another beautiful sunny day on the river. Lots of caddis and Hendrickson hatches coming off along with some stoneflies. Fishing over the weekend was great with a number of large fish taken on the Ausable with Wulffs, dun haystacks and stoneflies. The golden caddis was also a good producer over the weekend alng with the Ausable Caddis. A little tip for those fishing both the Ausable and the Saranac--don't waste your time or money buying flies smaller than 16 unless you plan to catch the stockies. Nearly every good size fish taken on 12 and 14 in the pocket and fast water sections on the stream. Water level is normal but a little bit on the low side. They stocked some large fish last week in the catch and release area. Also a number of small fish by the bridge but the bait fishermen have been pulling them out from the bridge so there probably aren't many left there now. Don't forget we have a FREE BBQ and fly fishing clinic this Saturday starting at noon. Lots of good home cooked food and fishing info along with individual fly casting lessons, also some great rod specials. We take trade-ins. We are having yet another greeat day on the river. Lots of hatches coming off and lots of fish being caught. Hendricksons and caddis heavy. River was stocked again on the catch and release section with trout up to 18 inches. A number of large fish were taken yesterday with most productive patterns being the AuSable Wulff size 12, dun caddis and dun Haystacks. Also stonefly nymphs, hendrickson nymphs and small coneheads. MAY 19, 2001

Today is another beautiful day on the Ausable. Huge hatches of Hendricksons and caddis coming off all day. A friend from New Jersey was on the river at 6:00 this morning and caught and released a dozen fish- the largest a 22 inch Brown and another Rainbow about 17 inches on a size 12 Ausable Wulff. Fishing is the best in many years with lots of satisfied fishermen. Patterns producing the best are the Ausable Wulff (big fish) and the dunn caddis, dun Haystack, grey conehead underneath and small grey Wulff. River is in perfect condition and fishing could NOT be better. Two of our guides had a party of six out all day yesterday and everyone caught fish to 18 inches (four were beginners) What a way to get initiated into the world of fishing! Yesterday was a fantastic day of fishing on the river and today the same is expected. Water temp is 60 degrees, overcast and lots of fish rising to Hendrickson,caddis and Ausable Wulffs and blue quills. A number of large fish taken yesterday fron 15 to 29 inches. Today is another good day of fishing on the Ausable and Saranac. Hendricksons coming off in big numbers and trout are taking dun Haystsacks (size 14) and the dun caddis. Bigger trout are hitting on the Ausable Wulff. Other patterns producing are the Hendrickson nymphs, small coneheads and the Ausable Caddis. MAY 16, 2001

Today is another great day on the river with big hatches of Hendricksons and caddis. Lots of trout taken on dun Haystacks, dun caddis, AuSable Wulffs and small gray wulffs. Small coneheads also taking some big trout in the deeper pools. Largest trout taken yesterday were two 21 inchers - one on an AuSable Wulff and the other on a conehead. MAY 15, 2001

River in great shape. Good hatches of Hendricksons coming off and trout rising to dries as well as taking the nymphs. Lots of fish in the 12 to 18 inch range. Whole river is producing well. Caddis also plentiful in the afternoon. Best patterns are the AuSable Caddis, dun Haystacks, dun emergers, gray Wulffs and AuSable Wulffs. Beadheads still producing well in the fast pocket water. Today the water temperature remains between 48 and 50 degrees. River level is back to about normal after the cooler night brought the level down. Yesterday saw some good hatches of Hendricksons in the afternoon. Fishing was good with size 14 dun haystacks. Lots of fish still taking small coneheads, beadheads ,mini-muddlers and nymphs along with the Ausable Wulff starting to account for some big fish.. Temperature to go into the mid 60s today. Today the river is up about 6 inches from the rain yesterday but the fishing is good and the river is droping down and should be normal again by tomorrow. Hendricksons coming off in the afternoon. A number of trout in the 19 to 21 inch range taken yesterday. Catch and Release area producing good along with the rest of the stream. Today is another 80 degree day and water temperature is 58 to 60 degrees. Trout are hitting good, some hatches beginning to come off. Lots of fish being taken on emergers, small beadheads and dun haystacks on the surface. They are stocking two year olds again today in the Catch and Release area. Fishing is excellent.
