May 15, 2008
The river is in absolute perfect condition for fly fishing, and the season is off to a great start. The warmer weather is bringing out good hatches of Hendrickson and caddis. The weather is suppose to be slightly cooler with the chance of scattered showers this coming weekend but that should not affect the good fishing too much. Water temp is ranging from 55 to 57 degrees. Flies you should have in your box should be the Hendrickson Haystack, beadhead Hendrickson emergers, small caddis flies and black beadhead crystal buggers. This last pattern has accounted for a number of fish in the eighteen to twenty inch range. This weekend is the annual Two Fly Contest and I will be the guest speaker. I also have finished a new dvd with a well known film maker that contains some fantastic footage of troutŐs underwater habits and history of the Ausable. This will be available for sale shortly.
Ponds have been doing well also with rainbows, salmon and lake trout still close to the surface.
